Översättarutmaningar
Här följer några svårgenomträngliga passager som en översättare kan råka ut för. Alla exempel är faktiskt autentiska.
Liten uppvärming
"Specifies the name of the SQL package created on the relational database
specified on the RPB parameter of the command that created this module."

Staplade substantiv – det fungerar bättre på engelska
än svenska, men lätt att förstå är det inte

Här gäller det att hålla ordning på fönstren

to the WorkStation window"
Många förkortningar!
"The CCSID associated with the CMPDTA does not change. If the CMPDTA is
being changed, the part of the CMPDTA that is of the type CCHAR is assumed
to be the same CCSID that the CMPDTA being replaced is in."
Övertydlighet
"A reminder is a message that reminds you of something"
"Duplicate unique values are not allowed"
"If only one of the MSG or SECLVL parameters is coded, but not both, any..."
"The foreign key access path of the dependent file is removed only if one exists..."
Exempel på en förenklande översättning 1
I en text stod det:
"Initial part added plus the number of records added per part added times the number of additions"
Någon i USA tyckte tydligen att det var lite oklart, så i nästa release hade formuleringen ändrats till:
"Initial number of records plus the product of the number of records added per increment times the number of increments added"
Hur som helst, på svenska blev översättningen i bägge fallen:
"Startvärdet + (utökningsvärdet x antalet utökningar)"
Exempel på en förenklande översättning 2
A top margin greater than or equal to zero and less than the logical page length is considered to be valid.Blev i översättning:
Övre marginalen måste vara större än noll och mindre än sidlängden.Vi har fått ett påpekande om att översättningen i det här fallet inte stämmer helt överens med originaltexten. Och det stämmer. Här kommer en kommentar från Martin A. som intresserat sig mycket för sådana här frågor:
"Det stämmer att en del av originalets exakthet försvunnit i översättningen. Problemet med det engelska originalet är just att det för sitt sammanhang är så överambitiöst. Hade det rört sig om en vetenskaplig text hade sådana formuleringar varit helt på sin plats. Men nu rör det sig om något så vardagligt som sidmarginaler vid utskrift i en hjälptext för folk som ska lära sig stoppa papper i en skrivare. Och den svenska versionen är lättare att läsa och lättare att förstå – vilket i det här sammanhanget faktiskt är det centrala.
Det är det vi menar med en förenklande översättning. Det hjälper inte hur exakt en hjälptext är om användarna inte förstår den."
